You run out of the house and grab a snack to fuel you during the day. But what do you grab?
Snacking is a part of your daily eating but remember to be wise when choosing what to snack on. Many snacks can be high in fat and sugar and give you more calories than you bargained for! Some healthy snack choices include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, See the handout below to help you make better choices when snacking.
Healthy eating means eating a variety of foods so that you get all the nutrients you need. Your body needs proteins, carbohydrates, and fats for energy. Yes, you heard that right...your body does need some fat, but choosing healthy fats and controlling the amount you eat are both recommended.
Healthy fats include:
* Olive oil
* Canola oil
* Corn oil
* Avocado
* Peanut butter
* Fish
* Nuts
* Seeds
All of these keep your heart beating, your brain active, and your muscles working.
Each day, try your best to eat from each food group including:
* Whole grains (such as whole-wheat bread and pasta)
* Fruits and vegetables (at least 5 servings a day!)
* Dairy products (such as skim or low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese)
* Lean protein (such as lean cuts of fish, skinless chicken, beans, and legumes)
* Limited amounts of fat (limit animal fat and choose healthy fats from the above list)
A big part of thriving and staying healthy is being physically active. When you move, you burn off calories. Being active makes it easier to reach and stay at a healthy weight for your body. Your goal is to move at least 1 hour every day and this includes walking, jogging, running, biking, dancing, swimming, and any sports that you play. Remember to pick an activity that you like and enjoy so that you are motivated in doing it!
As a teen, you are still growing and your body needs a balance of foods for that growth and development. This means dieting is not recommended. Diets are temporary, restrictive, and do not work. Most teens who diet gain back the weight they lost and often times gain more!
Remember that healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes. Let's do this right...choose a variety of healthy foods each day while staying active. You will feel your best when doing this!!
